Functions of the Church: Benevolence

Last week, we examined the function of worship for the local church.  Today, we will be looking at benevolence.

From the very beginning, God has made provision to meet the basic needs of his people.  In Leviticus, the Israelites were instructed to leave part of their crops in the field for the poor and needy to glean.  He also made provision for widows to marry a relative so that they would be taken care of.  The extended family was to care for the widows and orphans, but it was the community’s responsibility when they had no family.

This concept was extended into the church.  There were regular offerings taken for widows, orphans, and for the poor.  God works through Christians to meet these needs today.

Welcome!  As our guest, we want you to know that we are honored to have you join us for worship today.  We have a nursery provided beside the foyer for parents with infants or toddlers.  We also have a live video feed to our annex building.  Please complete a visitor’s card and place it in the collection plate as it is passed.  There is also a place on the back for anyone to submit prayer requests.  If you have a cell phone or pager, we ask that you please put it on silent or turn it off during worship.  If you have any questions about anything you’ve heard, if you’d like to request a bible study, or wish to know more about the Groveton Church of Christ, please let us know and we’ll be happy to help you.

Membership in our congregation rests upon examples provided in the New Testament for one to become a Christian.  Those steps and examples of each are...
Hear...................................................Acts 4:4               Believe....................Acts 16:31, Hebrews 11:6      Repent..........................Acts 2:38, II Peter 3:9        Confess..............Romans 10:9-10, I John 4:15               Baptism...................Acts 2:38, Mark 16:15-16       New Life............II Peter 2:18, Revelation 2:10

To become a Christian today
, at the singing of the invitation hymn following the sermon, proceed to the front to be met by the preacher or one of the elders.  You will be asked to confess your belief in Jesus Christ and you will be baptized.  However, if the need compels you, we can accomplish this at any time during the service or at any time of the day or night; just let our preacher or one of the elders know and we will be more than happy to accommodate you.

To place membership with our congregation,
you will be asked if you have met the above requirements including baptism by immersion.
